Santiago Segura directs and acts, joined by a Spanish-speaking Alec Baldwin, in the most recent instalment of this tour-de-force series. It’s 2018 and Spain has never been in a worse state, in the grips of financial crisis, forced to revert to the Peseta after being forced out of the Euro. Corrupt cop José Luis Torrente (Segura) is released from prison and – disgusted by this changed world – immediately falls back into brazen lawlessness. He chums up to sleazy Eurovegas Casino security chief John Marshall (Baldwin), hatching an Ocean’s 11 style plan for the heist of a lifetime. To pull it off, Torrente gathers a dysfunctional gang of miscreants that he knows from his years of “law enforcement”.
Delivering the most blatant and scathing social satire of the series, this fifth entry in Segura’s blockbuster franchise delivers gross-out humour aplenty. It’s the combination of this with acerbic and uncommon wit, that’s made Segura a superstar in his homeland.
